Why only England? What about Scotland and Wales? Or Ireland?
Whilst there are very many similarities between the nations that comprise the United Kingdom or inhabit the British Isles, there are also differences. Sometimes our histories and laws coincide, at other times they diverge. Some of the systems for recording the information needed to trace a family's history were begun, or have developed, differently in each country. Family History Journey is based in England, and specializes in knowing the ways and means by which the records of those who have lived in England, for all or part of their lives, can be accessed and understood.
In the process of uncovering the English part of your family tree, some ancestry from other parts of Britain or the world may be found. The journey will continue if the necessary records can be accessed by Family History Journey, which is often the case. In the event that we cannot proceed, you will be informed and advice given about what can be done next.
If you book the services of a local historian for an ancestral visit in England through Family History Journey, and wish to make a similar visit in a town or village situated in Scotland or Wales, this is not a problem. Family History Journey can offer you the same local history service in all parts of Britain.
Why should I want to trace my English ancestry?
Tracing your ancestry can be a wonderfully enlightening experience that grounds us wherever we now live in the world. Understanding where our family has come from helps us to understand who we are, where we are and why. Our ancestry can be a fundamental part of our identity.
Knowledge of our family history is a gift, a legacy, that we can pass on to our children, our nephews and neices, and their children too.
Why should I hire a professional genealogist? Can I do it myself?
Tracing your family history can take a lot of time. For some of those who do it themselves, it is almost a full time hobby they take up in retirement. You may not have the level of interest to dedicate the resources and time to such a project. A professional genealogist has the experience and knowledge to know where to get the relevant information quickly and easily. Family History Journey in particular already has access to the databases that you would need to subscribe to in order to progress your own research. You can do it yourself, and this process can bring its own rewards, but it can take a long while to acquire the skill level needed to get the answers.
