It's religious significance has altered over the years, but it remained important in English rural life until the industrial revolution.  <br /><br />Forced from the land, often on Lady Day, when their tenancy ended, many of ancestors would make their way to the north of England where they would forced to find work and accommodation in the new mass industries. Little remembered in modern, industrial England, Candlemas was important to agricultural England.  The midway point between the winter solstice and the spring enquinox, and opposite to Lammas, which celebrates harvest, it was the point at which fears of famine were expressed.  ]]></description>
